Cultural Participation for All

Promoting the Inclusion of People with Intellectual Disabilities in Museums

Michał Parzuchowski

The magazine "Teilhabe" (issue 3/2024, vol. 63) recently published an article on the project "Cultural Participation in the Museum II".

Leisure activities and cultural participation are key aspects of a fulfilling and balanced life. In an inclusive society, all people, regardless of their abilities, should have the opportunity to participate in cultural life. However, there is still a considerable need for action in this area, especially for people with intellectual disabilities (ID). The "Cultural Participation in Museums II" project aims to identify the specific needs of this target group and improve accessibility in museums and other cultural institutions.

Leisure time has a high status in society and is essential for a balanced life. The inclusion of people with disabilities in cultural activities is crucial for an inclusive society. While museums have already implemented accessibility for people with visual and hearing impairments, the needs of people with intellectual disabilities (ID) are not yet sufficiently taken into account. The "Cultural Participation in Museums II" project is therefore investigating the leisure needs of people with intellectual disabilities in order to promote their cultural participation. With the help of interviews, needs are to be identified and integrated into the work of museums and integration assistance centres. The aim is to improve the cultural participation of this group and break down barriers.
