Prof. Dr. Marcel Mierwald

Marcel Mierwald was appointed junior professor for Didactics of Educational Media with a Focus on History at the Leibniz Institute for Educational Media | GEI and the Technische Universität Braunschweig in March 2023. He works in the Media | Transformation department at the GEI and teaches the didactics of history at the university. His research is based in the field of historical teaching and learning in times of the digital shift as well as empirical research into history teaching.

Marcel Mierwald studied history, politics and educational science at the Freie Universität Berlin and then studied to teach German studies at the Ruhr University Bochum. He was a scholarship holder and then worked as a research fellow in the area of history didactics at the Ruhr University Bochum and gained his doctorate in 2019 with an empirical and didactic historical study of the effectiveness of teaching materials in student labs. After training as a teacher for grammar and comprehensive schools he worked as a post-doctoral researcher in the projects Historical Thinking Competencies in History (HiTCH), Menschen im Bergbau (MiB) and Empowering Police Officers and Teachers in Arguing Against Antisemitism (EMPATHIA³). In the winter semester of 2022/23 he deputised for the professor for modern and contemporary history and the didactics of history at the Technische Universität Dresden.
